A dangerous place to swim By Dylan Seibold If you are ever on Vancouver island, which is not to be mistaken for the city of Vancouver, and you feel like a swim there are many beautiful lakes and rivers to swim in. Among the many enticing swimming holes none are as pleasant as those to be found on Nanaimo River. But Nanaimo Rivers beauty comes with a deadly underbelly. At the top end of one nice pool there is a deceptive spot in which the entire bulk of the river funnels through a series of cracks and holes in the sandstone bedrock. To the casual observer there is but a benign stream flowing over beautiful stone sculpted by eons of water finding its way back to the sea. But if one was to venture into the inviting scene they would be lucky to escape with their lives. The spot has been dubbed "the Gun Barrel" an ominous and foreboding title , undoubtedly chosen to warn foolhardy youngsters. But as long as I have lived in Nanaimo the stream of unlucky swimmers, who perhaps failed to read the signs, continue to test their luck at this cursed spot. The last time I was there, many years ago now, the tally was over a dozen. A fact which was updated almost yearly as the death toll rose. Now this was not intended to be a horror story about a man eating waterway, but a warning for any would-be vacationers or perhaps someone who is new to the area who might just be thinking of going for a dip to cool off this summer. It is located about a Km west of White Rapids road on Nanaimo River Road, enjoy safe spots and always remember; look before you leap.
